In our last blog, we looked at the uses for Vinegar around the house and the things you shouldn’t use it for. This time, we take a look at vinegar’s best buddy, Salt, and the uses it has around the home. Salt also goes very well on chips, obviously, but how many of these handy tips did you know? Turns out Salt can solve a whole host of home disasters!
We knew salt could make food taste great, but we didn’t know it could make our home a better place, too. It transpires that a dose of good old Salt can solve a plethora of home disasters. Not only are these fixes incredibly easy, but they’re also usually cheaper than using other fancy cleaning products. Let Belle Casa take you through the best uses for Salt in the home or office.
- Get that sticky ‘gunk’ off your iron!
Turn your iron onto its highest setting and sprinkle a generous amount of salt onto a piece of wax paper. Move the hot iron over the paper, and watch the salt cause your gunk to fall right off. Ironing has never been so easy!
- Chill white wine in a snap.
The last thing you want this summer is warm white wine! Never fear – Belle Casa is here! Just put the bottle in an ice bucket with ice, water and a handful of salt. Twist the bottle to stir the salt around, and watch as the salt works its magic. Your bottle will be cold in no time!
- Clean up a cracked egg.
There’s no need for the massive amount of paper towels here. Just cover the mess with salt, and wait 10 to 15 minutes. The salt will turn the eggy goo into a crumbly sand that’s easy to wipe up. Genius!
- DIY dishwasher soap.
If you find yourself in a pinch, make your own dishwasher detergent from salt, baking soda and regular dish soap. It works like a charm! We covered this in our Tips for Using Baking Powder!
- Get rid of caked-on pan grease.
Cover the greasy residue with a layer of salt, then add some water and wait 10 minutes. The solution will dissolve the grease, allowing you to easily wipe it away.
- Clear up a red wine stain.
We all know you COULD pour white wine on it – but that wastes perfectly good white wine! Try sprinkling some salt on the fresh stain, and wait 5 minutes. Splash with cold water, and rub until the stain disappears. Job done!
- Clean a grime-covered sponge.
Fill a container with 2 cups of water and a quarter cup of salt. Leave your greasy, blackened sponge in the mixture overnight, then watch the grime fall right off when you take it out the next morning.
- Clean a grimy wood cutting board.
You shouldn’t put wood cutting boards in the dishwasher, but you can disinfect them with hot water, salt and lemon juice.
- Clear up a hair clog in the drain.
Make a “natural Drano” by mixing 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of salt. Remove as much hair from the drain as you can with your (gloved!) hands, and then pour the mixture down the drain. Follow with 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse everything down with a pot of boiling water.
- Get rid of mildew.
To banish mildew stains and smells from clothes or towels, make a paste from salt and lemon juice. Rub the paste on the stain, then let dry (ideally in the sun). Run clothes through the washing machine for good measure.
Simple as that! So why not put all the time you saved slaving away over these chores to good use with a lovely family day out at Bekonscot Model Village just up the road in Beaconsfield.
Bekonscot Model Village and Railway is the world’s oldest and original model village, opening for the first time in 1929. With over 80 years of history, huge model railway, 1.5 acres of immaculate gardens and finely detailed model buildings Bekonscot is a great day out for everyone.
Stuck in a 1930s time warp, see England how it used to be, and discover a wonderful little world tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Since its opening over 15 million visitors have been captivated by the charm and eccentricity of Roland Callingham’s creation.
Bekonscot is now operated by The Roland Callingham Foundation Charity, continuing the tradition established by our founder of welcoming visitors to the village and supporting worthwhile causes by sharing our income with charitable organisations. To date, we have donated over £5.5 million to various, mainly local, charities.
